Let's Ponder on this Verse

"And ˹remember˺ when your Lord proclaimed: 'If you are grateful, I will certainly give you more. But if you are ungrateful, surely My punishment is severe.'" (Qur'an 14:7)

This verse is among the most well-known and often-quoted verses in the Glorious Qur'an. It flows easily on the tongues of preachers, yet only a few truly pause to reflect and ponder on its deeper meaning.

The verse emphasizes the necessity for us as individuals to show gratitude and faith in Allah. All blessings we enjoy—life, health, wealth, knowledge, family, and more—were not granted by our own merit, but purely out of Allah's mercy and grace. What Allah requires from us in return is simply two things: gratitude and faith.

It should be noted that our gratitude and faith do not add anything to the eternal and limitless power of Allah. Rather, they reflect the nature of our hearts and souls. Through them, Allah increases His favors in our lives. On the other hand, ingratitude takes nothing away from Allah, but it deprives us of His mercy and exposes us to His severe punishment.

Sadly, many people reduce gratitude to mere words, thinking that saying "Alhamdulillah" alone is sufficient. True gratitude, however, is expressed in how we use the favors Allah grants us. If blessed with health, do we use it to worship and serve Him—or to fight against His commands? If blessed with wealth, do we spend it for His sake—or against His will, even neglecting our families and those striving in His path? If blessed with knowledge, do we use it to enlighten others—or to behave arrogantly, worse than the ignorant?

Allah opened the Qur'an with gratitude—"Alhamdulillahi Rabbil-'alamin"—to teach us how central and important it is. Gratitude brings increase, while ingratitude brings loss and punishment. And importantly, ingratitude is not only by words of denial but by actions—misusing blessings in ways that displease Allah.

So let us always remember: gratitude is more than a statement—it is a way of life.

Today, Friday 12th September 2025 (20th Rabi' al-Awwal 1447 AH), we turn to Allah in humility:

O Allah, You are the One who bestows favors upon Your creation—not because they deserve it, but because You are the Most Merciful and Most Gracious. We thank You for all that You have given us, and we beg You: grant us knowledge, wisdom, and guidance to use Your blessings in ways that attract Your mercy, earn Your pleasure, and draw us closer to You.
